Gold-plated vs gold vermeil vs solid gold: what you’re actually paying for

Okay, listen. Before you spend £80 on a pair of hoops, you should know what the label is actually telling you. “Gold”, “gold vermeil” and “18k gold-plated” sound similar and are priced miles apart, and most of the difference is in a layer thinner than a hair.

Solid gold: gold all the way through

Solid gold means the whole piece is a gold alloy. Pure gold (24 karat) is too soft to wear, so it’s mixed with other metals, and the karat tells you how much gold is left:

• 9k is 37.5% gold, the most common in the UK.
• 14k is 58.5% gold.
• 18k is 75% gold, warmer in colour and softer.

In the UK, anything sold as gold that weighs more than one gram has to carry a hallmark from an assay office. Solid gold won’t wear through, which is why it costs what it costs. Chunky hoops in solid gold easily run into hundreds of pounds.

Gold vermeil: silver with a proper coat

Vermeil (say “ver-may”) is sterling silver coated with a thicker layer of gold. There isn’t a single legal definition in the UK, but the standard most brands follow is at least 2.5 microns of gold over 925 sterling silver.

That thicker layer lasts much longer than ordinary plating, and if it does wear, what’s underneath is still silver, not brass. It’s the middle ground: a real step up in quality without the solid gold price tag.

Gold-plated: the thin one

Gold-plated jewellery is a cheaper metal, usually brass or stainless steel, with a thin layer of gold on top. When a label says “18k gold-plated”, the 18k describes the gold in that surface layer. It tells you nothing about how thick it is.

Plating is how you get a £28 pair of hoops that looks like an £80 pair, or a £300 one. It looks just as good on day one. The catch is time: water, perfume, sweat and rubbing slowly wear the layer away.

So what are you paying for with the £80 pair?

Here’s the thing. Both of these pairs are 18k gold-plated. Neither is solid gold and neither is vermeil. Astrid & Miyu list theirs as gold-plated brass. Orelia’s are the same chunky, polished shape, and 3mm bigger.

With two plated pairs, the extra £52 buys you the name, the box and the brand’s finish. That’s a completely fair thing to want, especially for a gift. But it isn’t more gold.

Which one should you buy?

• Buying a trend, or earrings for going out? Gold-plated is fine. Buy the good-looking cheap pair and look after it.
• Buying something she’ll wear every day for years? Spend the money on vermeil or solid gold, where the price actually goes on the metal.
• Buying for someone who loves the label? Then the label is the gift, and that’s allowed.

How to make plating last

Put perfume and moisturiser on first, jewellery last. Take it off to shower, swim or go to the gym. Store each pair separately so they don’t scratch, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing. None of this is glamorous, but it’s the difference between a pair that lasts one winter and a pair that lasts years.
